When to Call 911

Call 911 immediately if your child
  • Has possibly injured their spinal cord
  • Has been in a serious car accident
  • Has drowned and has been pulled from the water (start CPR)
  • Is actively seizing
  • Is excessively bleeding and requires constant pressure
  • Is choking (if you're trained to do the Heimlich maneuver, do so while the ambulance is on their way)
  • Is unconscious
  • Is having trouble breathing and is turning blue
  • Is having a life-threatening allergic reaction
  • Is receiving CPR or other life-saving interventions

If you suspect your child may have swallowed something poisonous, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 and follow their instructions before calling Dr. Kim.

Call 911 if your child needs to go to the ER and you
  • Feel too frantic or panicked to safely operate a vehicle
  • Cannot safely drive in difficult weather conditions
  • Do not have reliable or timely transportation to the ER

When to Call Dr. Kim Urgently or Go to the ER

All Ages:
  • Significant injury due to an accident or fall (especially head injuries)
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting blood
  • Dehydration
  • Purple bruising rash that appears suddenly
  • Heat exhaustion or heat stroke
  • Hypothermia
  • When something seems seriously wrong (trust your instincts!)

Infants Under 3 Months of Age:
  • Fever over 100.4°F (without adding a degree)
  • Unexplained sleepiness or listlessness
  • Diarrhea or blood in the poop
  • Refusing to feed two times in a row
  • Crying without an obvious cause
  • Fast breathing, wheezing, or a continuous cough
  • Serious choking episodes where the baby looks blue
  • Persistent projectile vomiting
  • When something seems seriously wrong (trust your instincts!)
